An away day is not a day. It's a weekend, or at least it should be — because driving five hours home after a 3pm kick-off is what a younger version of you used to do, and it wasn't fun then either. A hotel near the ground with on-site parking and a flexible cancellation policy is the difference between a proper away weekend and a night on the M6.
Here's how to book one without either overpaying on match-weekend surge or ending up in a hotel that's already full of home fans.
The three things that matter on an away day
Parking on-site. Match-day street parking around any Premier League or EFL ground is a nightmare of residents-only zones, £20 driveway offers, and stewarded diversions. A hotel car park solves all three.
Flexible cancellation. Sky and TNT still move fixtures for TV six weeks out, sometimes closer. If you've booked a non-refundable room for Saturday 3pm and the game moves to Sunday 4:30, you either lose the money or eat the change fee. Every hotel we list under the football away-day filter is free to cancel up to 24–48 hours before arrival, so the fixture-change email is a shrug rather than a wallet event.
A decent post-match option. Somewhere to eat, a couple of pints, a place to watch the late kick-off. Ground-adjacent hotels tend to be either brilliant at this or entirely useless — the reviews will tell you which.
Where to sleep near the grounds
A rough guide to what actually works at the bigger destinations:
- Manchester (Old Trafford, Etihad) — city-centre hotels are the play. A ten-minute tram to either ground, a proper night out afterwards, and pricing that's saner than the ground-adjacent options on a match weekend.
- Liverpool (Anfield, Goodison) — city centre or the Docks. Anfield-adjacent hotels are limited and pricey on match days; the walk in from the city is 20–25 minutes or a short cab.
- London (Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, West Ham, Fulham, Palace) — hotel choice is huge but very variable in quality. King's Cross for Arsenal, Stratford for West Ham, Wandsworth for Chelsea and Fulham are the sensible zones. Book onto a tube line rather than trying to walk from the ground.
- Newcastle (St James' Park) — city-centre location means most hotels are walking distance. Book anywhere on the Quayside or in the Grainger Town area.
- Leeds (Elland Road) — city-centre is a 15-minute cab, and much nicer than the immediate ground zone. Book central.
- Birmingham (Villa Park, St Andrew's) — city centre for the aftermath; near-ground for the walk-in. Villa Park hotels are thinner on the ground; the Aston area itself is functional rather than fun.
- Southampton, Brighton, Bournemouth — south-coast away days that turn into a proper mini-break with a beach walk on the Sunday. Book on the seafront.

The Sky-move problem, solved
Fixture changes for TV are the single biggest away-day booking headache. Two rules:
- Book the flexible rate. Even if it's £10 more per night than the non-refundable one, it pays for itself the first time Sky moves your game.
- Watch the Monday-morning fixture releases. Sky and TNT announce moves in batches roughly six weeks out. Set a calendar reminder for the relevant week and rebook the moment your fixture shifts.
Sento's football away-day filter defaults to flexible-cancellation rooms first, so you don't have to hunt for them.
The morning after
Late check-out is your friend. Most hotels near the grounds offer it free until noon; anything later is usually £10–£20. Ask when you check in.
For the drive home, avoid the immediate post-match hour — leave at 10am the next morning and the roads are quiet, the coffee's decent, and you've had six more hours of sleep than the friend who drove home on the night.

Stays on Sento are labelled charging on-site, charging nearby or standard — confirm charging with the property or a live charging map such as Zapmap before you travel. If the fixture ends up at a Wembley cup date, the hotels near UK arenas guide lines up walk-in options for the stadium area.
Book it clean
Sento's football away-day hotels page filters for onsite parking and flexible cancellation by default. Search the city, sort by distance to the ground or by price, and book. Same rate you see on the page is the rate you pay at the hotel, with the parking properly included.
Then just hope Sky leaves the fixture where it is.
