House moves rarely go to plan. The chain slips a week. The completion date moves twice. The renovation takes longer than the builder promised, and the day you were meant to move in becomes the day the plaster is still drying. Somewhere in the middle of that is a night — or a week — where you need a proper bed, a car park you can trust with a boot full of belongings, and a booking you can move if the dates shift again.
Here's how to book a between-homes hotel that fits around a move, without paying the last-minute walk-up rate or losing your deposit when the completion date changes for the third time.
What makes a good between-homes hotel
Strip it back and four things matter:
- Free cancellation, ideally up to 24 hours before. Moves move. You need to be able to shift the booking without penalty when the solicitor rings.
- Parking that's included and easy to reach. You're arriving with a car that isn't just yours — it's carrying whatever didn't fit in the removal lorry. Kettle, laptop, the framed photograph nobody trusted to a packing box.
- A weekly rate if the gap is longer than three nights. Chains reward multi-night bookings; a Monday-to-Friday stay should be materially cheaper per night than four separate one-nighters.
- Somewhere near the new house, not the old one. The temptation is to book near your current postcode — but you'll be driving to the new area every day to receive deliveries, meet trades or start unpacking. Sleep near the destination, not the departure.
Sento's between-homes hotels list filters for exactly these attributes.
The three most common between-homes scenarios
One or two nights while the completion catches up. The chain slipped, keys aren't ready until Wednesday, you moved out Monday. Book a single free-cancel room close to the new house with parking. Don't overthink it — a Premier Inn or Holiday Inn Express does the job at a sensible rate.
A week or two mid-renovation. The kitchen is being fitted, the bathroom is coming out, you can't reasonably live in the house until Friday-week. Look for an aparthotel or a chain with a weekly rate — Staybridge, Roomzzz, Native, Adagio, Wilde. You'll get a small kitchenette, laundry, a desk, and a proper multi-night price. Sento's contractors and long-stay hotels page shares a lot of the same inventory.
A month or more, waiting on a specific date. Rare, but it happens — probate delays, listed-building consent, structural work that snowballed. At this length, direct-negotiated corporate rates beat public booking rates by a distance. Email the reservations desk directly with your dates and ask about a long-stay rate; most chains have one they don't publish online.

Booking around a moving completion date
A few practical rules:
- Book earlier than you'd think. As soon as you know the move is imminent, book a placeholder room with free cancellation. You can always move or refund. What you can't do is find a free room the night before completion in a suddenly-full market town.
- Prefer chains for flexibility. Independent hotels are lovely but often stricter on cancellation. Big chains typically let you move within 24 hours; some allow it up to arrival.
- Book two rooms if you have children and it makes the family calmer. The £50 extra saves a night of nobody sleeping.
- Ask for early check-in. The removal lorry usually arrives late morning. If you can check in by 11am and dump the emergency bag before you meet the movers, the day gets much shorter.
What to bring
What lives in the car on move-day-to-hotel, in order of importance:
- Documents wallet — passports, mortgage paperwork, buildings insurance, the roll of receipts you'll want for tax.
- Overnight bag per person — three days of clothes, toothbrush, phone chargers, medication.
- Kettle, two mugs, tea, coffee, biscuits. Non-negotiable on the second morning.
- Laptop, notebook, the router if the new place isn't hooked up yet.
- Anything fragile you refused to let the movers pack.
A hotel car park you can walk to from your room, in the evening, without unloading in the rain, is worth the ten quid a night premium.
The EV footnote
If you're driving an EV between homes, an overnight AC charge means you leave the hotel every morning fully topped up for the trips between old and new addresses. Stays on Sento are labelled charging on-site, charging nearby or standard — confirm charging with the property or a live charging map such as Zapmap before you travel. A Sento Charging Promise is coming soon.
The short version
Book a placeholder room the day the move-date wobbles. Free cancellation, parking included, near the new house, weekly rate if the gap is more than a few nights. Sleep somewhere that lets you get up and get on with unpacking the next morning. Everything else is negotiable.
