EV Road Trip: The Scottish Highlands

Drive the Scottish Highlands in your EV — the charging stops, best hotels, and how ChargePlace Scotland makes it possible.

The Scottish Highlands is one of the most spectacular road trip destinations in the world. Loch Ness, Glencoe, the North Coast 500 — and thanks to ChargePlace Scotland, it's more EV-accessible than most people expect.

    The Charging Landscape

Scotland's government-backed ChargePlace Scotland network has placed chargers in many of the most remote locations — including villages, ferry terminals, and National Park visitor centres. Many are free to use. This doesn't mean you should head for Cape Wrath without a plan, but for the classic Highland routes, charging is manageable.

    Key hubs:

    • Inverness — your main charging base. Multiple networks, good facilities
    • Fort William — excellent charging hub, several networks
    • Aviemore — Cairngorms gateway, solid charging
    • Portree (Skye) — yes, there are chargers on Skye. Plan ahead, but it's doable
    • Kyle of Lochalsh — before or after the Skye Bridge

    Classic Highland Routes

The Great Glen (Inverness → Fort William)

80 miles along Loch Ness. Perfectly manageable on a single charge for most EVs. Chargers at both ends and in Fort Augustus midway.

The Road to the Isles (Fort William → Mallaig)

47 miles. One of the UK's most beautiful drives. Charge in Fort William before you go.

    Glencoe

In the middle of the Great Glen route. Dramatic, wild, and easier on battery than you'd think — it's not that far from Fort William.
