EV Charging in Cold Weather: What Every UK Driver Needs to Know

Cold weather affects EV range and charging speed. Sento's practical guide to driving and charging your EV through a UK winter.

British winters are rarely arctic, but even the UK's mild cold has a noticeable effect on EV performance. Here's what to expect and how to manage it.

    Why Cold Weather Affects EVs

Lithium-ion batteries perform best at 20–25°C. Below 10°C, chemical reactions inside the battery slow down, which reduces both the amount of energy you can store and the rate at which you can charge.

Typical range reduction in UK winter conditions (5–10°C): 15–25% compared to summer range figures.

    Practical Cold Weather Tips

    1. Pre-Condition While Plugged In

Most modern EVs let you set a departure time via the app. The car heats the battery and cabin while still plugged in — using grid electricity rather than the battery. This is genuinely one of the best EV features in winter.

    2. Expect Slower Rapid Charging

Below 5°C, DC rapid charging speed is reduced until the battery warms up. Some EVs (particularly those with active battery heating) handle this better than others.

    3. Add 15% to Your Charging Plan

If you'd normally plan to stop at 20% in summer, stop at 30–35% in winter. The margin matters more when range is reduced.

    4. Hotel Charging Overnight Is Even More Valuable in Winter

Overnight charging at a hotel means a warm battery in the morning (if the hotel has a covered car park, even better). This genuinely improves your morning's performance.

Stays on Sento are labelled charging on-site, charging nearby or standard — confirm charging with the property or a live charging map such as Zapmap before you travel. A Sento Charging Promise is coming soon.
