The Volkswagen Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid that's ideally suited to UK driving patterns — electric for commuting, petrol for longer runs. Keeping the battery topped up is the key to getting the most from it.
GTE Charging Specs
- AC maximum: 3.6kW (single-phase, Type 2)
- Battery: approximately 12kWh usable
- Electric range: around 35 miles
Charging in Practice
At 3.6kW, a full charge from flat takes around 3.5–4 hours. The GTE charges overnight easily from any 3-pin or Type 2 socket.
The GTE cannot use DC rapid chargers — its maximum is 3.6kW AC. This is fine for overnight hotel stays but means roadside rapid charging adds very little.

Best Charging Strategy for GTE Owners
- Charge fully overnight at home or at a hotel
- Drive in electric-only mode for shorter journeys
- Use petrol on the motorway
- Top up at the destination hotel for the return
Hotel charging is genuinely important for GTE owners making longer trips. Stays on Sento are labelled charging on-site, charging nearby or standard — confirm charging with the property or a live charging map such as Zapmap before you travel. A Sento Charging Promise is coming soon.
